CHAPTER 18 THE LONG WALK TO TOWN
This excerpt is from the criminal trial. Vickie Brown is on the stand and is being questioned by State Prosecutor, Robert
Ahsens. Q. "..How was it you were able to get away?" A. "..I heard his son Jeremiah come out of the house and he was saying
"Dad, what's going on?"..He yelled several times for his wife, and he and his son kind of had words. Well, when they had words
or was trying to get him to go back inside, I thought I could get over to the driver's side and just put the truck in gear
and take off. And so I scooted over to the driver's side and tried to put the truck in gear, but I didn't know it wasn't running.
Well, when I did that, the door on the passenger side comes open and he comes across and he grabs my arm, my right hand and,
you know. So I just pull--This door is not even shut. I'm going to take off with the truck door open, but anyway, he grabs
me and I just pull and struggle, and I fall out on the ground, and when I fell out on the ground, I just got up and I didn't
look back. I ran. I just ran. I ran to the woods." Q. "Now this area is outside of town where his home is located. Is that
right?" A. "Yes, sir."..Q. "How far is it to town, if you know?" A. "I know it's five miles. I walked five miles with no shoes
and no shirt." Q. "When you--Did you pass any houses along the way?" A. "I passed numerous houses, sir." Q. "Well, did you
have any indication that there was anyone there at any of the houses?" A. "In my state, sir, I was just trying to survive.
I wasn't thinking about people being home. I was afraid somebody was going to be looking for me. I was afraid they were coming
after me." Q. "So you kept going. Did you see any vehicles while you were moving towards town?" A. "Every time I saw a vehicle
go by, I hid in the ditch." Q. "Did you see any businesses along the way?" A. "Yes, I did...I didn't think there was anyone
there. There was a Delano station, but I didn't see anyone, any movement in the store, and again, I'm no shirt, no shoes."
Q. "So you kept going?" A. "And I was scared to death." Q. "What--How did you eventually receive help?"..A. "I actually walked
to G and W store, where it used to be a store. It's closed. And there was a pay phone and it worked because I always called
Brian from that phone. I had used it on numerous occasions , and I called for help from that phone." Q. "Who did you contact
for help?" A. "I contacted, ended up contacting Bob Cole which is a friend of our family." Q. "Did he come and get you?" A.
"Yes, sir, he did." Q. "Where did he take you?" A. "Originally he wanted to take me to the hospital, but I was such a panicked
fright, I wouldn't let him...He ended up taking me back to his residence." Q. "Did he later put you in contact with your
family?" A. "Yes, he did."
